Brazilian fed named Interpol head

0

Executive Committee of Interpol on Tuesday proposed Brazil’s Valdecy Urquiza as a candidate to be the next secretary-general of the world’s largest global police organization.

Mr. Urquiza, a Federal Police officer, currently serves as one of Interpol’s three vice presidents. He also holds the position of director for international cooperation at Brazil’s Federal Police.

If endorsed by a majority of Interpol’s 196 member countries during the next general assembly in November in Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Urquiza will replace the current secretary-general, Germany’s Jürgen Stock, who is serving his second five-year term.

According to Interpol, the secretary-general is “responsible for the day-to-day decision-making and functioning of all General Secretariat duty stations around the world.” He is also “the principal spokesperson for the Organization, engaging with policing and government leaders and at press conferences and briefings”.

The Brazilian government said in a statement that the election of Mr. Urquiza reflects its “high priority” to combating transnational organized crime. It added that “it also represents recognition, by the international community, of the professionalism and competence of the Brazilian Federal Police in combating crime, as well as its relevant contribution to Interpol’s work.”

In late 2022, the United Nations elected Brazilian scholar Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant to an International Court of Justice seat.
