Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Monday and Tuesday, June 24 and 25, 2024

Sunday results

Columbus Clippers 9, Pawtucket Red Sox 7

Box Score · Clippers improve to 32-42

The Clippers ouslugged their opponents on Sunday, rallying with eight runs in the final three innings, including four in the top of the ninth to pull off a comeback victory.

Johnkensy Noel got the offense kickstarted with a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 18th bomb of the season.

The Clipper who had the biggest day offensively was actually Christian Cairo. Cairo was perfect at the dish, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and two stolen bases. He also scored two runs and knocked in a pair.

Other standouts included Jose Tena, who went 2-for-6 with a stolen base, Kyle Manzardo, who went 1-for-3 with two walks, Myles Straw, who went 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base, and Raynel Delgado, who went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Will Dion pitched effectively, giving up two runs on four hits in four innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Three consecutive bullpen arms gave up runs until Anthony Gose and Hunter Stanley locked things down in the eighth and ninth innings.

Akron RubberDucks 1, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 0

Box Score · RubberDucks improve to 37-32

Now that’s how you make a Double-A debut!

In a rain-shortened game, Parker Messick pitched a five-inning shutout on four hits. He struck out four and walked one as Akron gave him exactly one run of offensive support, which was all he needed.

Joe Lampe was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 while Gabriel Rodriguez doubled.

Lake County Captains 3, South Bend Cubs 10

Box Score · Captains fall to 42-27

It was an ugly day all around for Lake County. Jorge Burgos had a strong game offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double while Zac Fascia went 2-for-3 with a home run and Alex Mooney walked and singled, but that was pretty much the extent of Lake County’s offense.

Four separate pitchers for Lake County gave up at least two runs in a particularly ugly day from the mound. Matt Jachec’s High-A debut didn’t go well as he came out of the bullpen and was tattooed for two runs on three hits and two walks in 23 of an inning, leaving with the bases loaded.

Lynchburg Hillcats 7, Charleston RiverDogs 5

Box Score · Hillcats improve to 39-30

For once, it wasn’t the middle of Lynchburg’s batting order that carried the load as Ralphy Velazquez and Jaison Chourio went a combined 0-for-9.

Leadoff hitter Tommy Hawke had himself a day, going 2-for-4 with his first pro home run, a three-run bomb in the fifth inning. He also doubled in a run.

The bottom of the batting order also was superb as Manuel Mejias walked twice, Jose Pastrano went 1-for-2 with two walks and Luis Durango went 1-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice.

Kyle Scott got the start and he was effective, allowing one run without giving up a hit in three innings. He walked three and struck out one.

Monday results

ACL Guardians 6, ACL Rangers 5 (F/7)

Box Score · Guardians improve to 16-22

Yerlin Luis led the Guardians, going 2-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and a stolen base. Yaikel Mijares went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored a pair of runs. Alberto Mendez went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a stolen base as well. Barrett Riebock went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch.

Starting pitcher Keegan Zinn, a high school arm, was effective, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk in four innings while striking out five batters.

DSL CLE Goryl 6, DSL Tampa Bay 4

Box Score · Goryl improve to 12-4

It was an impressive day at the office for the CLE Goryl offense. Luis De La Cruz led the way, going 3-for-4 with his second career home run and a stolen base. The 17-year-old Dominican prospect sports a .903 OPS through his first 13 games played.

Three other players had multi-hit games. Jhorvic Abreus went 2-for-4 with a double while Santiago Ustariz went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base and Brayan Guedez went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Cuban starting pitcher Miguel Flores dominated, tossing 4 13 shutout innings with eight strikeouts. The 19-year-old allowed three hits and also walked three.

DSL CLE Mendoza 3, DSL Rojos 4

Box Score · Mendoza fall to 6-8

Not much happened for the CLE Mendoza squad offensively. Yelserth Ayala led the way, going 1-for-2 with a walk, a hit by pitch and a stolen base. He scored two of the team’s three runs on the day.

Robert Arias went 1-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base while Gabriel Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Starting pitcher Edelvis Perez was effective, giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks in three innings. The bullpen kept Rojos off the board for five more innings before a three-run blowup in the bottom of the ninth cost them the game.
