The Beckhams Are Really Feeling Nostalgic
Victoria and David Beckham are really feeling nostalgic these days. A few months after reuniting the Spice Girls at Victoria’s 50th-birthday party, they appear to be celebrating their 25th anniversary by digging up the matching purple outfits they wore for their 1999 wedding reception.
“Look what we found,” the couple wrote under a joint Instagram post where they can be seen wearing the most vivid violet satin under the sun — a hue that anyone familiar with their nuptials will recognize immediately.
If you need a refresher on the Beckhams’ wild 1999 wedding, allow me to jog your memory. It happened at a castle in Ireland, and was — according to tabloids — Robin Hood–themed. The Spice Girls were there, obviously, as was a 4-month-old Brooklyn Beckham, who somehow “served” as ring bearer. The couple appeared on the cover of The Sun proudly lounging on crushed-velvet purple thrones, Victoria in a white Vera Wang gown and David in a cream suit, the outfits they wore for their ceremony. For the reception, though, they changed into coordinated floral Antonio Berardi looks in bright violet. One photo shows baby Brooklyn in a similarly hued bib, onesie, shoes, and … cowboy hat!! Incredible.
The Beckhams appear to have conflicting feelings about their sartorial wedding choices on this holiest of days. In 2017, David confessed on BBC’s Radio 4 that he, too, had a purple top hat to go with the outfit, likening his appearance that night to “the guys out of Dumb & Dumber.” Though he thought Victoria’s dress was great, he said of his own outfit, “What was I thinking?” Posh, on the other hand, seems pretty consistently satisfied with the evening as a whole — for their anniversary last year, she proudly posted a video of the couple in their purple outfits, cutting into their Damien Hirst–designed cake with a sword (??). In last year’s documentary Beckham, she said of their wedding, “We weren’t worried about what people were going to say. I mean, Christ, how lovely to be that way when you just don’t really care, you just want to express yourselves.”
On that point, at least, it seems David has come around — he looks mighty happy on that throne, don’t you think? Dumb & Dumber, my ass.
