The Red Sox signaled a follow-up roster move Monday when they optioned right-handed relief pitcher Cam Booser to Triple-A Worcester.
But as it turned out, Boston made more than one transaction ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against Oakland at Fenway Park.
Trey Wingenter took Booser’s spot on the Red Sox’s active roster. Wingenter was acquired Saturday in a deal with the Detroit Tigers, who landed fellow relief arm CJ Weins. Craig Breslow and company designated Naoyuki Uwasawa, a late March trade acquisition, for assignment in order to make room for Wingenter on the 40-man roster.
Tuesday’s transactions weren’t limited to the pitching staff. The Red Sox also executed a middle infield swap, sending Enmanuel Valdez to Worcester while calling up Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A. The 29-year-old Westbrook, who made his big league debut last month, previously was sent to the minors June 17 when Romy González was ready to return from injury.
Valdez will head to Worcester despite finding a bit of a groove lately. The 25-year-old logged at least one hit in six of his last seven games, including a pair in last Friday’s dramatic extra-winnings win over the Yankees in New York.
The Red Sox on Tuesday will try to secure another victory over the A’s, who won the fourth-worst record in baseball. NESN’s coverage of the opener begins at 6 p.m. ET.

According to BioWare, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the first entry in the series where "the combat's actually fun" and where characters are "intentionally" the focus of the storytelling, which seems pretty unfair on the first three games
