Restaurant proposed
at former school site

The owners of 304 Caledonia St. have applied for a conditional use permit for a restaurant and coffee kiosk.

The property, which is between Locust and Litho streets, used to be the Sparrow Creek Montessori School. The school closed in 2020, and the new owners bought the building in 2022, according to a staff report by Matthew Mandich, a city planner.

The proposed 30-seat restaurant would operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and include beer and wine service. The coffee kiosk would be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Outdoor seating would be set up in the rear garden area.

The Planning Commission has scheduled a hearing on the permit request for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at City Hall.

Suspect accused
of home invasion

Authorities arrested a convicted felon who allegedly armed himself and invaded his ex-girlfriend’s home in Novato, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

A witness accused him of committing the offense Friday on Indian Springs Road. Authorities stated that the suspect carried what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun, pushed the woman aside and searched for another man inside the home.

Later, Petaluma police pursued and detained the suspect, a Petaluma resident. The sheriff’s office said that a loaded, unregistered gun was found in the suspect’s vehicle and another unregistered firearm was discovered at his home.

Justin Kiesselbach, 38, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, exhibiting a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Marin County Jail with no bail amount set, and remained in custody Tuesday.

The commission held a hearing on the application on June 26.

WEATHER

Air pollution agency
issues smog advisory

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared a “spare the air” day on Wednesday, expecting rising temperatures to keep ground-level ozone measurements at unhealthy levels.

“Very high inland temperatures in the 100’s and weak afternoon sea breeze, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog,” the district said.

According to the district, the air quality will be unhealthy for the elderly and very young, and those with heart, respiratory or other health conditions. The district advises residents to limit exercise to “early morning hours when ozone concentrations are lower.”
