NEW YORK (WPIX) - On Monday, New York City's Department of Sanitation unveiled its first-ever official trash pickup bin.

It's the cheapest one of its quality, according to city officials. Whether residents get the official bin or buy on their own, any building with one to nine units will need to have one by Nov. 12, when new container rules go into effect.

“Today, we are tossing even more black bags into the dustbin of history and taking the next step forward in our ‘Trash Revolution,’” said Mayor Eric Adams. “The first-ever, official NYC Bin is high-quality, affordable, and will build on our efforts containerizing more than 70 percent of the city’s trash to protect our most valuable and limited resource — our public space.”

The official NYC bin runs about $50. New Yorkers should order by Oct. 1 to have their bin (available online at bins.nyc) by the time the requirement goes into effect.

Property owners who own a "lidded bin" of under 55 gallons can continue to use the bin through 2026, the city's sanitation department said.

Mayor Adams' push to clean up NYC's streets has also included new rules for garbage, some of which were announced last April. The new requirements were designed to keep landlords, business owners and residents from placing garbage bags directly on the streets, where they can pile up and entice rats.
