Morning Briefing: Stearns Undecided on Mets Deadline Strategy
Good morning Mets fans!
The Mets made a move to upgrade their bullpen on Tuesday, acquiring Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hours later, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns took a neutral stance when discussing the team’s approach as this year’s deadline approaches.
“We’re going to continue to see what is out there and moves that may make sense for us and continue to learn about our team in the coming weeks,” Stearns said.
“It’s just about trying to do what we can to put the best team on the field that we possibly can. We’ve tried to be as proactive as possible throughout the course of the year, incrementally upgrading where we can and this is another example of it.”
Maton bolsters a bullpen that has allowed 45 runs in 47 innings since June 23. The 31-year-old has a 4.58 ERA in 40 appearances this season, though he’s allowed only one run in his last 12 innings.
The Mets seemed destined to auction off their pieces at the deadline. A 16-8 record in June and a mark above .500 in July have brought the team back into playoff contention and potentially reversed their deadline plans.
