The geopolitical dynamics of the Korean Peninsula have always been of international concern due to its strategic importance and historical tensions. Recently, Russia and North Korea reached a defence agreement, and Indonesia has emerged as a crucial mediator. Leveraging its positive relationships with Russia and China, Indonesia aims to promote peace and stability. This paper contends that Indonesia's strategic position and diplomatic capabilities uniquely qualify it to mediate and reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula, thus fostering a more stable and cooperative regional environment.

The post-defence agreement between Russia and North Korea is a major development in regional geopolitics. The agreement aims to enhance military cooperation, including the transfer of potential military arms and technology from Russia to North Korea, as well as an increase in joint military exercises. This strategic partnership is seen as a counterbalance to the influence of the United States and its allies in the region. Furthermore, Russia's provision of economic and humanitarian aid to North Korea may strengthen this alliance and impact the overall regional security situation. These developments could potentially escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula, requiring proactive engagement from other regional actors to prevent conflicts.

Indonesia has a significant role to play as a balancer in this context. By focusing on mutually beneficial projects that foster interdependencies and discourage conflict, Indonesia can play a pivotal role in promoting lasting peace and stability.

3. Support Peacekeeping Initiatives: Indonesia should actively participate in United Nations-led peacekeeping and conflict resolution efforts. By contributing its wealth of experience and credibility to international peacebuilding missions, Indonesia can make a substantial impact.
