Assistant Dan Geriot likely leaving for Pelicans

It appears that Geriot is moving on from Cleveland.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans have been sharing headlines throughout the summer. The Pelicans have been interested in Jarrett Allen dating back to last year, there’s the consistent Brandon Ingram rumors, and it seemed that New Orleans assistant James Borrego was going to be the head coach of the Cavs. There’s a natural familiarity between the two organizations likely due to David Griffin, New Orleans executive vice president of basketball operations, serving as Cavs general manager.

Cavs assistant Dan Geriot potentially leaving for New Orleans could be the latest chapter in that connection. Chris Fedor of cleveland.com has reported that Geriot is “probably not going to remain on staff.” He could be in line for a front-of-bench role on Willie Green’s staff.

Geriot began as a video coordinator with the Cavs for the 2015-16 season. He served as assistant video coordinator/coaching assistant from 2016 until 2018 and was then promoted to assistant coach for the 2019-20 season. Geroit then became the head coach of the Cleveland Charge for the 2021-22 season where they finished with a 12-34 record. Geriot returned to being an assistant coach with the Cavs for the 2022-23 season and has been in that role since.

New Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson has been busy adding members to his staff despite serving as an assistant for the French National Team in the Olympics. He’s added Jordon Ott, DeMarre Carroll, Johnnie Bryant, and Trevor Hendry so far. We’ll see what other moves on the bench happen once Las Vegas Summer League wraps up.
