Moore woman accused of trying to burn daughter's cat alive on grill
MOORE, Okla. (KFOR) — Residents in a Moore neighborhood are floored after a woman was arrested for allegedly placing a cat on a burning grill.
"It's just heartbreaking to hear this," said Lynn Davis, a neighbor who lives nearby.
Moore Police officers rushed to the home in late June, finding the unthinkable when they arrived, a cat being burned alive.
According to court documents, a 16-year-old girl was looking for her cat when she heard "loud meowing from the grill."
The teen said her mother, Veronica Carrillo, had been in the backyard grilling.
Documents state the girl removed the hood of the grill and saw a "black trash bag wrapped around an animal carrier on the grill with visible flames underneath."
Carrillo left the home through a window and was found hiding under a rug on her neighbors front porch.
Body camera footage shows the encounter with Carrillo.
"I was cooking out and the cat got burned. Had to be done, you know I'm sorry," said Carrillo in the video.
"What had to be done?" asked the officer in the video.
"I mean I had to cook," said Carrillo.
"What were you cooking?" asked the officer.
Officers tried to coax the injured but alive cat out. Injured but still alive, the cats paws and whiskers singed.
Neighbors can't believe what happened.
"I'm horrified and totally disgusted that someone did something so inhumane," said Davis.
Carrillo was arrested on animal cruelty charges.
"We need to send a message to anyone abusive to any animal, and this is horrific. She needs time in jail, possibly prison," said Davis.
Carrillo remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.
She is due back in court later this month and records show her family has filed a protective order against her.
