Report: Tottenham player could miss the start of the season after incident earlier this week
Tottenham Hotspur will need a full squad firing on all cylinders in the coming campaign if they are to compete on all fronts, but one player could be missing for some time if FIFA decide to come down hard on him for his behaviour at Copa America.
Rodrigo Bentancur could face disciplinary action
Uruguay players clashed with Colombia fans after their recent Copa America semi-final defeat, with Rodrigo Bentancur one of the main culprits.
As per the Daily Mail, Bentancur was seen throwing two bottles into the crowd from the edge of the pitch.
The incident occurred after Colombia fans appeared to approach the families of the Uruguay players in the stands at the match which was held in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Now, the latest from The Sun suggests Bentancur, and Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, could be facing severe action from FIFA for their involvement.
It is thought the players “could face a lengthy ban” for their actions. Apparently, any player involved could be set for a “global ban” from the governing body.
Any suspension would impact the start of the new Premier League season in August, which would be a huge blow for Ange Postecoglou.
Why did the fracas start?
Uruguay defender, Jose Gimenez, has spoken candidly on the incident, explaining why it all began and condemning the lack of action from the police at the stadium.
He said: “This is an embarrassment, there wasn’t one police officer to control them. We had to go and defend our own just because they can’t control their drinking.
“It was a disaster; there was no police and we had to defend our families… I hope that those who are organising this are a little more careful with the families and the people around the stadium.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Regardless of the motives for the Uruguay players, they simply have to be banned for what happened.
The rules are, you cannot clash with fans in this way, and the precedent is certainly for players to receive pretty big bans for such behaviour.
