Man Utd could now sign 'remarkable' £60m striker after Joshua Zirkzee, Ineos are ambitious - report
Manchester United have not ruled out the possibility of signing more than one striker during the summer transfer window, according to The Telegraph.
The Red Devils are currently on the cusp of landing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and they are expected to make a transfer announcement in the coming hours.
United have made an outlay of around £35 million for the Dutchman but it is reported that the club have not ruled out signing another centre-forward this summer.
The Red Devils are keeping tabs on the situation of Brentford star Ivan Toney, who has already entered the final year of his contract at the west London outfit.
United can make big statement with double striker swoop
Zirkzee is one of the best upcoming young strikers in European football. The 23-year-old made 19 goal contributions from 37 appearances for Bologna last term.
He created 11 big chances in the Italian top-flight which was the joint fourth-most. With better creative players at United, his goal involvements should only improve.
Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund could emerge as prolific goalscorers in the long run, but we won’t be surprised if the club invest on another experienced marksman.
Toney had a difficult 2023/24 campaign after his eight-month ban with only four goals from 17 games. He seemed to struggle in the back end due to the lack of pre-season.
In the season prior to that, he netted 21 goals for the Bees. The 28-year-old has proven himself at the top level and would be another top acquisition for the Red Devils.
Brentford value the England international at £60m, but some believe they could accept closer to £40m for the striker, who was described as ‘remarkable‘ by manager Thomas Frank.
INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have already shown ambition with plenty of transfer bids. We won’t be surprised if a formal proposal is made for the services of Toney.
If United were to sign him, it could probably mean that manager Erik ten Hag may have to consider the double-six formation (4-2-2-2) to play two strikers up front.
