British tourist, 47, killed in front of family by out of control car in Greece
A British woman has been killed in front of her family on an island in Greece.
The 47-year-old had been out for a walk in the town of Chania, Crete, when a car ploughed into their group.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and smashed into the woman and her 54-year-old sister-in-law as a result.
The victim, who suffered an injury to the head, was rushed to a hospital in the nearby town of Rethmino.
She died there a few hours later. Her sister-in-law survived the crash, but suffered abrasions to her arms and legs, the Sun reported.
The incident happened around 7.30pm on Friday. Hellenic Police are currently investigating.
The car ended up in a field with one image of the scene showing a damaged silver Peugeot next to an olive tree.
The name of the victim has not yet been revealed.
This is the latest incident in Greece involving a British tourist, after a young man died after falling ‘head-first’ from a hotel balcony on the party island of Zante.
The incident happened on Thursday last week, just hours after a second Brit fell from the first-floor balcony of his hotel.
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, and is a popular tourist destination for UK holidaymakers.
There were more than 800,000 visitors from the UK in 2023, the second highest after Germany, according to research site Statista.
