Climbing is seeking an Editor in Chief with deep editorial experience and a passion for climbing to work alongside a team of experienced climbers, outdoor enthusiasts, and talented writers to deliver high-quality, engaging content across platforms that keeps readers informed about the latest trends, techniques, gear, and destinations.
The ideal candidate is an experienced climber who has national magazine or website editing and writing experience and feels at home on a small team. This position requires organization, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a demanding environment under tight deadlines.
Within 1 month, you will:
Assume responsibility for Climbing‘s existing staff, writers, content, editorial processes, and audience.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define the short-term and long-term editorial vision and strategy.
Brainstorm stories, make assignments, and write 3-5 stories per week for Climbing.
Engage with a diverse mix of new writers and contributors.
Maintain key performance metrics.
Within 6 months, you will:
Implement a comprehensive editorial calendar and content plan.
Foster a collaborative and creative environment for the editorial team.
Establish relationships with influential climbers, industry experts, and a diverse group of potential content contributors.
Analyze audience engagement data and reader feedback to optimize content strategy.
Explore opportunities for exclusive interviews, features, and special projects.
Collaborate with marketing and social media teams to amplify content reach and engagement.
Meet all benchmarks and KPIs as assigned.
Within 12 months, you will:
Solidify Climbing‘s position as the leading voice in the climbing community while meeting all goals and KPIs.
Identify and cultivate new content verticals or niches to expand readership.
Develop a talent pipeline and mentorship program for diverse writers and editors.
Represent Climbing at industry events, conferences, and speaking engagements.
Continually evaluate and refine content strategy based on performance metrics and audience insights.
Explore opportunities for strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations.
What YOU bring to Climbing: (Preferred Qualifications)
10+ years of combined experience in both climbing and editorial
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading abilities. You are a player and a coach.
Proven experience in digital editorial leadership roles
In-depth knowledge of the climbing industry and outdoor recreation
Expertise in channel management, digital publishing trends, SEO, and content optimization
Expertise in managing and motivating teams
Exceptional project management and organizational skills
Established authority in the climbing and active lifestyle communities
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
This is an entirely remote job that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $80,000- $94,000. Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more.
