The Punjab Counterterrorism Department announced the arrest of Amin-ul-Haq, Osama bin Laden’s former assistant and a senior Al-Qaeda leader, in Punjab.
In a statement released on Friday, July 19, the department stated: “Amin-ul-Haq was involved in numerous terrorist activities.”
Dawn News Pakistan reported that Amin-ul-Haq’s name is listed among the global terrorists by the United Nations.
Pakistan described the arrest of Amin-ul-Haq as a “significant breakthrough” in the fight against terrorism within Pakistan and globally.
The Punjab Counterterrorism Department stated that Amin-ul-Haq was involved in planning a “major terrorist project.”
A Pakistani senior officer stated that a case has been filed against Amin-ul-Haq, emphasizing that investigative authorities will determine what actions a high-ranking terrorist in Pakistan undertakes.
Osman Akram Gunadal stated, “He was seen in Afghanistan in 2021. He also possesses a Pakistani identification card with Lahore and Haripur addresses.”
The United Nations Security Council website indicates that Amin-ul-Haq was born in 1960 in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan. He was designated as a terrorist on January 25, 2001.
Osama bin Laden, the founder of Al-Qaeda, was killed by US forces in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in 2011.
Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s deputy, was also killed in 2022 following the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul.
According to a report, Amin-ul-Haq entered Afghanistan shortly after the Taliban seized Kabul. At that time, videos of his convoy of vehicles entering Nangarhar province from Pakistan were circulated on social media.
The arrest of Amin-ul-Haq is a significant setback for the Al-Qaeda network in the region. However, the increase in ISIS presence poses a major security concern for regional countries.
