If you were unaware, the 27-year-old model starred in an ad campaign for the relaunch of the brand’s SL72 sneaker. The campaign honored the anniversary of the 1972 Olympics, which took place in Munich.
Her involvement in the campaign caused a backlash online, prompting Adidas to issue a formal statement. Meanwhile, sources have also explained how Bella feels about the situation.
Head inside to see why the ad is sparking controversy…
If you were unaware, during the 1972 Olympics, Palestinian terrorists planned an attack and murdered multiple Israeli competitors before taking nine hostages who were later murdered.
Bella, who is Palestinian, has been an outspoken advocate of Palestine amid the war with Israel. Thus, critics took issue with her being involved in a tribute to the games.
Adidas removed the campaign images from social media. The brand also issued a statement.
“We are conscious that connections have been made to tragic historical events — though these are completely unintentional — and we apologize for any upset or distress caused,” the brand said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Sports. “As a result, we are revising the remainder of the campaign. We believe in sport as a unifying force around the world and will continue our efforts to champion diversity and equality in everything we do.”
According to reporting by TMZ, Bella is considering a legal battle and “retained lawyers to take action against Adidas for their lack of public accountability.”
The outlet reported that she still had a contract with the brand but held them accountable for what happened.
