‘Remember these?’ beauty fans sent into a frenzy as a viral hair piece they used to wear as teens makes a comeback
THE NOUGHTIES fashion has been taking over our high streets for some time – but it’s not just fashionable garments that are making a comeback.
From teeny butterfly clips all over our heads to the so-called space buns loved by Britney Spears and Spice Girls, the 90s and early 2000s were indeed an interesting and an experimental time for hairstyles.
We’d style our highlighted locks with heaps of gel and would think that a zig-zag parting was totally normal, whilst to achieve volume we’d reach for a crimping iron.
As the iconic era is making a debut on the fashion runways, social media users have been sent into a frenzy as a once-popular hair piece they used to rock as teenagers is returning.
The beloved item is no other than the hair extension scrunchie, which many of us wore as a simple hair bobble in a ponytail.
Either full of bouncy curls or tight ringlets, the scrunchie was every teen’s and little fashionista’s dream, available in almost every colour possible.
But fast-forward to 2024 and it looks like we’ve finally figured out how to rock this hair accessory to achieve the perfect and sleek look, as demonstrated by one TikTok user Ashley Paige.
The LA-based blonde recently posted a simple tutorial on how to achieve the best ”messy bun” in just minutes – and it’s all thanks to the noughties-inspired trend.
According to the lifestyle influencer (@ashley.paiige), you first need to separate the front section of your tresses – in the video, she did so around her ears.
Once done, she put the back section into a chic ponytail before taking the ”early 2000s hair extension scrunchies” and using it as the ”ponytail holder”.
The beauty then twisted the rest of the pony, wrapped it around the massive bun and secured it with a regular hair tie to keep it in place.
To complete the sleek look, Ashley also curled the two front pieces before pulling them back and attaching them with bobby pins.
”You are left with the chicest and easiest sleek, messy bun.
”Try it out – it’s my favourite hairstyle,” she said in the clip.
”Anyone else remember these hair pieces?” Ashley, who boasts over a staggering 425k followers, wondered in the caption.
Since being posted on the platform just two days ago, the video has already taken the internet by storm, winning the blue-eyed stunner over a whopping 460k views.
Dozens of fellow fashion lovers raced to comments, where they revealed the viral accessory was giving throwbacks.
Biggest beauty mistakes
Fabulous' Beauty Editor Tara Ledden has shared the do's and don'ts when it comes to beauty.
“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you’re not getting the basics right, the rest is wasted.
“There aren’t many non-negotiables, but these are the biggest beauty mistakes sabotaging your regime.”
- Not wearing SPF: Sun-damage is the main cause of premature skin ageing, so if you want to keep your skin looking plump and glowing, sun cream is vital.
- Using expired products: Best case, they’re ineffective and don’t deliver the results they promise, worst case they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products differ – for example, mascara is usually good for 3-6 months while lipstick can last for 9-18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a jar and will have a number inside for how many months it’s safe once opened. If you can’t remember when you opened your product, throw it away and start again, marking the month and year with a permanent marker on the packaging.
- Not knowing your undertones: If you’re using make-up with the wrong undertones, it’ll never look natural no matter how much you blend it! An easy trick to work out whether you have cool, warm or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue, you have cool undertones, if they’re green, you have warm and if they’re a mix you have neutral.
- Skipping heat protector: It might feel unnecessary, but much like sun damage on the skin, excess heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So, if you want shiny, healthy hair, or you’re trying to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is key.
- Not washing your face before bed: it’s as simple as this, if you’re not washing your face before you go to sleep, everything that’s been on your skin during the day is sitting there for even longer, clogging your pores and drying out the surface. Any skincare applied on top isn’t going to be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’re probably going to end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
One person said: ”So much nostalgia from the extension scrunchie!”
Someone else was just as excited about the return of the item, writing: ”Those scrunchies are the best! Once you match your hair colour you’ll live in them!
”So easy on vacation or in the summer after showering to do a clean bun.”
A third thanked for the easy tutorial, writing: ”20 years later I know how to use that type of scrunchie.”
”This is so cute! I used to love these as a teen, this way doesn’t look obvious it’s a hairpiece,” another commented.
