Spurs may be looking to add a third-choice keeper to their ranks with the club reportedly scouting ex-Accrington Stanley shot-stopped, Toby Savin, who has failed two medicals at Manchester United according to reports.

Spurs may need a homegrown third-choice goalkeeper

Tottenham have long had both Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin as their third-choice goalkeeper options but there could be some movement in the ranks this summer.

Fraser Forster, Spurs’ current number two, has been injured for a long period of time and at 36 years old, may struggle to maintain a Premier League level for much longer.

Brandon Austin recently signed a new deal with the club until 2029, while Alfie Whiteman has a single year left on his deal. Luca Gunter has been successful with the U21 squad too and could end up being the heir to Vicario in a few years but isn’t ready just yet.

Spurs are likely to need to choose a homegrown goalkeeper should they sign a new backup option with Football Insider reporting that Tottenham are currently only just meeting the quota of eight homegrown players.

They would subsequently fall short of the quota should one of the current keepers leave and be replaced with a non-homegrown option.

Toby Savin has been scouted by Spurs for three seasons

That is perhaps the explanation behind why Tottenham have been scouting 23-year-old Shrewsbury goalkeeper, Toby Savin, according to The Sun.

Savin joined Shrewsbury as a free agent this summer, but The Sun reported that the keeper narrowly missed out on a stunning switch to Manchester United last summer after failing two medicals, meaning United instead signed veteran, Tom Heaton.

Spurs have reportedly been scouting the goalkeeper for the past three seasons, alongside fellow Premier League sides Newcastle and Manchester United.

Spurs Web opinion

Signing Savin would have definitely been a far-afield option, even as a third-choice goalkeeper, but the 23-year-old must have had plenty of potential when he was younger to cause so many big clubs to start scouting the youngster.
