House Speaker, Minority Leader announce task force to investigate Trump shooting
WASHINGTON (KLFY) -- House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D- N.Y.) have announced a bipartisan House Task Force to investigate the attempted assassination of presidential candidate Donald Trump.
In a joint statement, the two called the security failures that allowed the attempt on Trump’s life "shocking."
"In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter,” the statement read. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”
The Task Force will be empowered with all investigative authority of the House of Representatives including subpoena authority, according to the statement.
The stated goals of the Task Force will be:
- To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
- To ensure accountability
- To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again
The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms.
The House will vote on a resolution this week that will establish the Task Force and its members, the statement read. The task force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats.
