Shepherd boy freed after 3 days of imprisonment by employer in Daikundi province

Local officials in Daikundi province confirm that a 10-year-old child, responsible for herding several sheep was imprisoned in a sheep pen by the owner of the flock and was released after three days.

Ghulam Ali Javid, spokesperson for the Daikundi Security Command, stated that on Monday, July 22, this 10-year-old child was rescued from captivity in the Khidir area of ​​Khairkhana district after spending three nights there.

Officials in Daikundi province say that one person has been arrested in connection with this incident and has confessed to the crime.

According to Mr. Javid, the arrested individual confessed that he imprisoned this 10-year-old child in a sheep pen after accusing him of “falling short in his responsibilities.”

It should be noted that during these three days, the child was tortured by his employer.

Child labor remains a significant issue in Afghanistan, exacerbated by the dire humanitarian situation since August 2021.

The political instability and economic downturn have pushed many families into poverty, forcing children to work under hazardous conditions to support their families.

The lack of enforcement of child labor laws and the breakdown of social services have further worsened the plight of these vulnerable children.

Since the Taliban’s takeover, reports indicate an increase in child labor across various sectors, including agriculture, mining, and domestic work.

Many children are deprived of their right to education and subjected to exploitation, physical abuse, and hazardous working conditions.

International organizations and human rights groups have raised alarms about the urgent need for protection and support for these children amidst ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan.
