Golf Course Etiquette
By: Kaelyn Lacefield
Golf is about tradition and respect, not just for the sport itself but also for the people you’re playing with and the course you’re on. Whether you’re a pro or just starting, knowing and practicing good golf etiquette is key to making sure everyone has a great time. Here are some tips to keep in mind next time you hit the greens at Redlands Mesa Golf Course in beautiful Colorado.
- Show Up on Time
Being on time is a big deal in golf. Try to get to the course at least 30 minutes before your tee time. This gives you enough time to check in, warm up, and get to the first tee without feeling rushed. Plus, it helps keep everything running smoothly.
- Dress the Part
Most golf courses have a dress code, so looking the part is a good idea. Think collared shirts, golf slacks, or shorts. Steer clear of denim, gym shorts, and T-shirts. Opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate activewear that allows you to move freely. Investing in proper golf attire and accessories can enhance your experience and keep you looking sharp on the course.
- Keep the Pace
Nobody likes waiting around, so keep up with the pace of play. Be ready to hit when it’s your turn, and try to avoid any unnecessary delays. If the group behind you is faster, let them play through.
- Take Care of the Course
We all need to pitch in to keep the course in good shape. Here’s how:
- Fix your divots: Use the sand/seed mix provided to fill any divots you make.
- Repair ball marks: Fix any pitch marks on the greens to keep them smooth.
- Rake bunkers: After you’ve played from a bunker, give it a quick rake so it’s nice and tidy for the next player.
- Stay Quiet and Still
When someone is about to take a shot, keep quiet and try not to move around too much. This will help them focus and make their best shot.
- Mind the Cart Rules
Stick to the course rules for cart usage. Usually, that means keeping carts on the path near greens and tee boxes. Avoid driving on wet or soft areas to prevent damaging the turf.
- Watch Your Shadow
On the putting green, be mindful of where your shadow falls. Make sure it’s not over the hole or someone else’s putting line. Shadows can be super distracting.
- Mark Your Ball
Always mark your ball on the green to avoid mixing with other players’ balls. Use a coin or a small marker, and put your ball back in the same spot.
- Respect Other Players
Golf is a social game, and good vibes are essential. Compliment good shots, be patient, and keep a positive attitude. Avoid negative comments or actions that could ruin the fun for others.
- Know the Rules
Stick to the rules of golf and any local rules the course has. Knowing and following the rules helps keep things fair and fun for everyone.
- Turn Off or Silence Your Phone
Make sure your phone is on silent or vibrate. A sudden ring or notification sound can be very distracting when someone is about to take a shot.\
- Mind Your Step on the Green
Be careful not to step on another player’s putting line. The line to the hole is critical, and stepping on it can affect the path of the putt.
Practicing good golf etiquette makes your round more enjoyable. It shows respect for the game, the course, and your fellow golfers. At Redlands Mesa Golf Course, we’re all about maintaining a friendly and respectful environment for everyone. By following these etiquette tips, you’ll help make the experience great for all.
Golf is as much about character and respect as it is about skill. Enjoy your game, and see you out on the course!
