600 Runs in a Day? Ollie Pope Believes England Can Achieve It

Ollie Pope believes that England can score 600 runs in a single day of play in a Test match, and he dismisses any possibility of them easing up on their extremely aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of hitting.

England hold the record for the most runs scored in a day when they piled up 588 for 6 on the second day of the Manchester Test against India in 1936, and Pope believes the current side under Ben Stokes can eclipse that.

“Sometimes we might score 280 to 300 in a day but that’s OK and probably because we’re reading situations. There might also be a day where we go and get 500 to 600 at some point in the future as well. And that’s a cool thing to have,” Pope was quoting as saying by ‘BBC Sport’.

At the first Test match between England and Pakistan at Rawalpindi in December 2022, England amassed 506 runs on the first day.

England defeated the West Indies 241 runs at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, last week, to extend their lead in the three-match Test series to 2-0. This triumph came after an innings victory at Lord’s.

Edgbaston will host the third and final Test on Friday.

With totals of 416 and 425, the victory in Nottingham marked the first time England had scored 400 or more in both innings of a Test match. Along with Joe Root and Harry Brook, Pope (121 in the first innings) was one of three England centurions in the second Test.

Under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Stokes, England’s offensive Bazball style has become second nature, but Pope acknowledged that there may be occasions when the players need to “manage the game a little bit more.”

“I got questioned ‘do you get told to play like that?’ on my first day at Trent Bridge. No, that’s not the case. We basically approach it that way because it’s in our nature,” Pope remarked.
