'Republicans can't help themselves': Ex-GOP lawmaker warns Harris attacks are backfiring
Republicans are fumbling with attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris that are also offending women and people of color across the country, critics say.
As one former GOP lawmaker stated, they "can't help themselves."
Speaking to MSNBC's Jose Diaz-Balart, former Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock addressed Republican lawmakers' accusations that Harris is a "DEI hire" — suggesting she was hired as vice president because she's a Black woman.
Comstock was talking about Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made a plea to his caucus to attack Harris on policy matters rather than on her race and gender.

"The speaker is right to say that," Comstock explained. "But unfortunately, it is usually the least accomplished men who make those attacks.
"We know it is harder for women. Even the most accomplished women get those types of attacks. Obviously, the vice president has an accomplished career as an attorney, the attorney general, the senator, and now the vice president."
By contrast, she said, Trump took over his father's empire and filed for bankruptcy six times for five companies.
"He's been impeached twice. He has been found guilty of sexual assault. Obviously, a felon," Comstock continued. "And then you have J.D. Vance, who is a junior senator and is much less accomplished than Vice President Harris. And here he has been out there attacking women as childless cat ladies."
She pointed out that Vance appears to enjoy going on the Fox networks, where many hosts are childless, like Maria Bartiromo, Shannon Bream and Dana Perino.
"I think [they] are happy with their lives, pretty accomplished, but he defines women by whether they're childless, and you have no idea why women might be childless," Comstock said.
"These petty attacks coming from men, a lot of women are going to see this and really be appalled by it because we're used to this. We know it is a lot harder for women, and women are the deciders in these swing states. So, you know, these Republicans can't help themselves, and it is going to be to their detriment."
