Where are people moving to Austin from? California is on top, U-Haul data shows
AUSTIN (KXAN) — California is the most common place from where people are moving to Austin, according to data from U-Haul.
The moving company released its mid-year migration trends report Tuesday, showing where one-way trips originated.
For the Austin metro, California was the most common starting point, ahead of Florida and Colorado. Here's the full top 10 for top origin states:

- North Carolina
Los Angeles was the most common city where one-way trips to Austin originated, excluding other cities in Texas. Here's the full list:
- Los Angeles
- Phoenix
- Denver
- Atlanta
- Oklahoma City
- Miami
- New Orleans
- Chicago
- Albuquerque
- Nashville
Within Texas, the most common starting points for one-way trips to Austin were Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Killeen/Temple and Brownsville/McAllen.
Migration doesn't just go one way, though. Austin ranked fourth as the most common starting point for people moving to Denver, as well as eighth for people moving to Oklahoma City.
Austin also ranked ninth for people moving to Los Angeles, ninth for the San Francisco Bay Area, tenth for Seattle and tenth for Portland.
Earlier this year, U-Haul revealed Texas was the most popular state for people to move to for the third year in a row, ahead of Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
California ranked last among all states and had the largest net loss of one-way movers for the fourth year in a row.
As of July 2023, the city of Austin had an estimated 979,882 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, a 1.87% increase since the 2020 census. Austin remains the fourth-largest city in Texas, and the 11th-largest nationwide, having fallen out of the top 10 in 2023.
