Brazil in Paris 2024: stressed and poorly dressed 

A few days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic games, netizens in Brazil complimented the stunning uniforms that the Mongolian delegation will use at Friday’s opening ceremony, outfits that stole the show with their impressive details, forms, and textures. 

The same was true for the uniforms designed for the Cuban and Haitian teams. “They are so beautiful that athletes deserve a medal just for using them,” one commenter said on social media. 

But the uniforms of Brazil’s Olympic team didn’t receive any such praise. In fact, they came in for some severe criticism. 

Seen as boring, lacking style, and having little link to Brazil, the plain opening ceremony uniform has been the subject of intense discussions online this week.

Even Brazilian pop icon Anitta waded into the debate. According to her, the ‘look’ reflects “exactly how athletes are treated in the country: no structure, no opportunities, undervalued.” Many agreed with her. 

Instead of taking the criticism on the chin, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) hit back, rejecting criticism and declaring that the athletes are taking part in the Paris Olympic Games, not Paris Fashion Week.

Needless to say, the official retort did not go down well at all.
