Israel likely to retaliate following missile attacks on Golan Heights
Israeli media reports indicate that the country’s National Security Committee has convened to address the recent missile attacks on the Golan Heights in northern Israel. In this meeting, the committee granted the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defense full authority to respond to these attacks as they see fit.
According to a report by the Israel Times released on Sunday, July 28th, the emergency security meeting, attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was held to evaluate potential responses to the attacks by Hezbollah on a playground in northern Israel.
On Saturday, a playground in Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights was targeted by missile strikes, resulting in at least 12 casualties, including children and teenagers, with 19 others, mostly aged between 10 and 20 years, injured.
These attacks, attributed by Israel and the White House to Hezbollah, have sparked widespread international reactions. Hezbollah has strongly denied involvement, and the Lebanese government has called for an international investigation into the incident.
In his initial response, Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened severe retaliation against Hezbollah: “Hezbollah will pay a heavy price for these attacks, a price they have not yet paid.”
Recent reports indicate that Israel is determined to retaliate against Hezbollah. The National Security Committee has granted the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defense full discretion to decide on the nature and timing of their response to Saturday’s attacks.
As concerns about the escalation of the conflict in the region reach their peak, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged all parties to exercise “restraint.” Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron, in a phone call with Netanyahu, has called for measures to prevent the expansion of the conflict.
The situation remains tense, with international leaders closely monitoring the developments. The possibility of further escalation underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and prevent a broader conflict.
