Melinda French Gates Revealed What Her ‘Grandma Name Is’ & Many Are Confused by It
Melinda French Gates truly loves being a grandma, and while giving rare details about life as a grandma, she revealed her unique Grandma name.
During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Melinda gladly talked about her granddaughter Leila, and revealed her unique Grandma name.
“My grandma name is Nonna,” Melina said, to which Colbert asked, “Oh! Are you guys Italian?”
“No!” she replied. “And that’s what my kids say, ‘Mom, how did that name come up?'”
She added, joking, “I love it. My siblings picked it and I thought, ‘That’s great!’ I wanted something that started youthful and I don’t know…it sounded more youthful in Italian.”
So, they’re not Italian, but Melinda is officially “Nonna,” and we’re sure she loves telling confused friends and family members the story behind it! (And if you need anymore proof that she loves being “Nonna,” it’s literally on her X profile bio.)
For those who don’t know, Melinda and her ex-husband Bill Gates were together from 1987 to 2021. They welcomed three children named Jennifer Katherine Gates, born on April 1996, Rory John, born on May 1998, and Phoebe Adele, born on Sept 2002.
Jennifer welcomed her daughter Leila on March 2023 with her husband Nayel Nassar, making her Bill and Melinda’s first grandchild.
In a rare statement on her X account back in 2021, she shared a photo of her three children with the caption reading, “I love being their mother. Whatever Mother’s Day means to you—a day to celebrate a mom, honor a memory, or reflect on your own resilience—I hope your day is a meaningful one.” (You can see the post HERE!)
