Developments on Cyprus problem expected August, September

President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday met Cypriot diplomats at the Presidential palace in Nicosia, expressing the hope he would soon have something to share about the Cyprus problem.

At the meeting, Christodoulides informed the diplomats of the latest developments regarding the issue, as well as other matters concerning Cyprus’ policies on a “wide range of issues”.

“An effort is underway to restart the talks under our own initiative,” he said, adding it is possible that “we will soon have some developments, even within August or at the beginning of September”.

“We are ready,” he added.

He also said preparations are underway for Cyprus to hold the rotating presidency of the European Council in 2026, and spoke about the Amalthea plan, Cyprus’ humanitarian aid corridor to Gaza.

“The initiative for the humanitarian corridor to Gaza is also underway, a particularly important issue because it indicates in practice a goal which we have been trying to highlight in recent years,” he said.

“In conjunction with this are the discussions at the European Commission on the composition of the new commission, with some new portfolios suggested by the commission’s president [Ursula von der Leyen] which are also related to our own effort.”
