Marc Castro, George Acosta Make Weight For DAZN Main Event To Kick Off Riyadh Season Fight Week
Marc Castro is set for his first career headlining act.
The unbeaten 24-year-old prospect made weight for his scheduled 10-round junior lightweight clash versus George Acosta. Tuesday’s weigh-in saw Castro (12-0, 8 knockouts) weigh right at the 130-pound divisional limit. Acosta (17-2, 3 KOs) weighed 129 pounds for their DAZN main event on Wednesday from Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California.
The card is part of a fight week for the U.S. debut from the group behind Riyadh Season. Three days later, Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) defends his WBA 154-pound title versus three-division champ Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Initial talks called for one marathon show, which would have left Castro-Acosta as part of a preliminary undercard. They instead get their own spotlight, atop a show that will immediately trail the Madrimov-Crawford open media workout event.
Castro fights for the second time in 2024. His previous outing was his first career ten-round bout, as Castro outpointed Abraham Montoya (22-6-1, 14 KOs) on an April 6 DAZN show in Las Vegas.
Acosta suffered a ten-round defeat to Rene Tellez in his most recent bout. The setback took place on the Feb. 8 Teofimo Lopez-Jamaine Ortiz undercard in Las Vegas. It snapped a ten-fight win streak for the 27-year-old from Whittier, California.
The show’s chief support features 2016 Olympic Silver medalist Shakhram Giyasov, who faces Miguel Parra in a ten-round welterweight bout.
Uzbekistan’s Giyasov (15-0, 9 KOs) was 149.4 pounds for his second bout of the year. Mexico’s Parra (22-4-1, 14 KOs) was 149 pounds for just his second fight in the U.S.
Castro and Giyasov are both promoted by Matchroom Boxing, who serves as the lead promoter for Wednesday’s card and Saturday’s pay-per-view event.
The opening bout of the evening is provided by Queensberry Promotions, headed by Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren. Matchroom and Queensberry are the primary promoters for the Riyadh Season shows since its launch last October.
Nathan Lugo (1-0, 1 KO) was 168.8 pounds, while Ray Corona (4-1, 0 KOs) was 167.8 pounds. They will meet in a scheduled four-round super middleweight contest.
Lugo signed with Queensberry earlier this year. His pro debut came on April 19 in Atlanta, where he needed just 93 seconds to lodge his first career victory.
