‘Avoid them like the plague’ interior designer cries over common summer decorating mistake they hate
AS the weather finally warms up it might be tempting to bring some of that that bright cheer into our homes.
The right summer decor can transform our living spaces into tranquil retreats, while the wrong choices can leave us feeling gloomy.

Zara O’Hare, an interior designer at Land of Rugs, said: “With the right colours, we can make our homes feel like a breath of fresh air, but it’s also easy to go wrong.”
According to the pro, the biggest mistake folks can make when decorating their homes for the summer season is opting for dark colours.
“Everyone has their decor preferences,” she said, “but darker colours are better suited to winter and they should be avoided like the plague in summer décor.”
So, what’s the problem with dark shades?
These colours can feel pretty heavy in a home, especially during the summer months, while lighter shades create a bright and airy atmosphere.
“For example, dark green can feel a bit Christmassy, while dark orange a bit Halloweeny” explained Zara. “They should be avoided during the summer.”
“Use lighter and airier colours and fabrics that will create a fresh and bright feel in your home,” suggested Zara.
“And I’m not just talking about wall colours. Swap heavy throws for lighter linen ones during summer, and replace accent cushions with softer, neutral colours like muted yellow, blue, and cream.”
These hues feel more summery as they evoke sunshine, clear skies, the ocean, and the beach,” Zara explained.
Zara also warned about overusing one colour scheme.
“Opting for cream walls, a cream sofa, cream chairs, a cream rug, and a cream throw can look a bit too neutral and bland,” she said.
“It’s important to add a few complementary tones to transform your space from dull to dapper.”
“For example, if your main shade is cream, adding a few green and gold touches gives a more luxurious vibe.”
Trends interior designers hate
IF you want to ensure that your home looks glam, here are the trends that interior designers can't stand.
NO YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, yellow paint in a bedroom is a big no no.
He said: “If you want everyone to know you’re a horse girl then yellow is perfect for you.”
SIGN OFF: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest thoughts on Live, Love, Laugh signs.
The interior pro explained: “Another gripe of mine – Live, Laugh, Love – those kinds of wooden things that sit on book shelves and floating shelves, that’s so 10, 12, 15 years ago.”
NO GREY YAY: Julie Provenzano explained that grey interiors have been overdone.
She stressed: “We took a good thing and we overdid it to the point that it now feels copy, paste, basic.”
