NYSP: Brooklyn man arrested for scamming Rensselaer County resident

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- State Police announced the arrest of a Brooklyn man for allegedly scamming a Rensselaer County resident. Sheng Chen, 46, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree criminal impersonation.

Troopers say they were contacted by a Rensselaer County resident on May 21 saying they believed they were the victim of a scam. Troopers conducted an investigation and found that the victim had been contacted via computer by a person who said they were an agent from the Federal Communications Commission.

The impersonator demanded payments which resulted in more than $25,000 being stolen, according to State Police. Troopers reported that their investigation led them to identify Chen as the impersonator.

Chen was identified with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center (CRCAC), the New York State Intelligence Center (NYSIC), and the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He was arrested in New York City and turned over to the State Police before being transported upstate.

Chen was arraigned in Schaghticoke Town Court and placed in Rensselaer County Correctional Facility. Troopers say the investigation into additional suspects is ongoing.
