NYPD sergeant gives thumbs up while leaving hospital after Manhattan shooting
CHINATOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – Two NYPD sergeants shot on Thursday after a Manhattan armed robbery are expected to make a full recovery, according to officials.
A 43-year-old sergeant is still hospitalized at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and could be released as soon as Friday morning. A 34-year-old sergeant, with 11 years on the job and from the 7th Precinct, gave a thumbs up from his wheelchair after he was discharged from the hospital Thursday afternoon.
He had his pregnant wife by his side as he left.
Joshua Dorsett, 22, was allegedly robbing women who gathered to play mahjong on Canal Street in Chinatown, according to authorities.
Dorsett then fled the scene to Eldridge Street. It was less than 10 minutes before the sergeants tracked him down, per police.
The sergeants tried to stop Dorsett, who allegedly pulled a gun out of his pocket, according to authorities. That's when a bullet grazed the 34-year-old sergeant and struck the 43-year-old sergeant in the groin, per police.
Dorsett is a suspected gang member who was on probation. He had visited his probation officer just six hours before the shooting, according to authorities.
Charges are pending against Dorsett.
