Kalyan hoarding collapse: A massive hoarding collapsed in Kalyan area of Thane district of Maharashtra on Friday morning, bringing back memories of the Mumbai hoarding collapse tragedy which claimed dozens of lives earlier this year.

Visuals shared on social media showed a large wooden billboard crashing down on three vehicles parked below amid heavy rains in Kalyan area near Mumbai on Friday morning.

According to officials the incident took place at around 10:30 AM at busy Sahajanand Chowk and no injuries or casualties have been reported.

In a statement, Kalyan Tehsildar Sachin Shejal said the hoarding came crashing down due to heavy rains and gusty winds which lashed the area on Friday morning, crushing three vehicles parked below it.

Following the incident, Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation commissioner Indurani Jakhad visited the site and assured strict action against the the contractor for failing to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Jakhad, who visited the site along with additional commissioner Harshal Gaikwad and deputy commissioner of KDMC’s property department Ramesh Misal, said a police complaint will be lodged against the erring contractor and he will be held liable for damage to vehicles and medical costs of injured individuals, if any.

A KDMC release said the civic body will make efforts to ensure those affected get compensation and also reiterated that all hoardings will be checked to prevent a repeat.

The Kalyan incident brought back memories of the deadly hoarding collapse in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar on May 13 this year, which left 17 people dead and 74 others injured.
