Premier League cult hero Dwight Gayle, 34, on trial in League One with ex-Man Utd player who was in top flight last year
STOCKPORT fans reckon they are “winning League One if we get them” after watching TWO ex-Premier League heroes on trial.
One-time cult Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle and Ollie Norwood, a midfielder in the top flight with Sheffield United last season, lined up for the League Two champions against Blackburn.
Stockport triallist Ollie Norwood was a main name at Sheffield United, including with this stoppage-time penalty winner vs Wolves last November[/caption]Gayle 34, spent six years in all at St James’ Park, also starring for Crystal Palace, West Brom, Stoke and Derby.
And 33-year-old Norwood was released by the Blades following relegation.
The 57-cap Northern Irishman, was a Manchester United academy kid.
But he never broke through at Old Trafford – moving on to Huddersfield, Reading and Brighton.
Stockport supporters appeared shocked and delighted to see the duo in friendly action for the third-tier newcomers on Friday night.
One fan posted: “Wow they’d be 2 incredible signings.”
Another raved: “Jesus Christ, could you imagine?!?!?”
But there was a dispute over which of the two stalwarts would be the more spectacular recruit.
Who are these famous footballers?
- I was West Ham captain but I almost went to jail over bankruptcy
- I’m a former Man Utd star and I once stole a girl from Ronaldo
- I’m an ex-Man Utd star – now I own a dog-themed B&B
- I was Thierry Henry’s toughest opponent but quit to become a pastor
- I’m a former Wolves striker but I left football behind to become a vicar

One fan said: “Dwight Gayle will always score goals!!”
And another backer of the renowned poacher added: “I would love to see Gayle play.”
The former non-league ace was freed by L1 rivals Derby two months ago.
And overall, it seems Stockport fans were more impressed by Norwood – because of his impressive recent pedigree.
The anchorman amassed more than 200 appearances as a main man for Sheffield United since 2019.
That includes 97 games and two goals in the Prem for the yo-yo club.
One fan said: “Norwood would be a huge signing and hope we get him .”
Another agreed: “They’d be useful signings. Norwood particularly.”
But with clubs still trialling plenty of players, seasoned supporters will know so much can change before someone actually signs.
