Report: Tottenham U21s play Birmingham City in a behind-closed-doors friendly
It’s not just Tottenham’s senior team who are gearing up for the new season, the club’s U21s are also getting ready to defend their PL2 double by facing League One favourites, Birmingham City, in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
Tottenham U21s won the PL2 last season
Spurs’ youth team came on leaps and bounds last season as U21s manager, Wayne Burnett nurtured a crop of exciting young players, many of whom have since featured for the first team.
Tottenham ripped apart the PL2 last season, comfortably lifting the PL2 league phase trophy, then defeating Aston Villa, Liverpool, Chelsea and Sunderland in order to lift the PL2 play-off trophy too.
Will Lankshear, Jamie Donley and Tyrese Hall were some of the squad’s main stars, but with many of them expected to go on loan or become part of the first team, the U21s will have to rebuild next season.
The U21s have enjoyed a challenging pre-season schedule so far, facing professional side, Leyton Orient, as well as non-league teams, Dagenham & Redbridge, St Albans and Enfield Town and experiencing a warm-weather training camp in Alicante.
Spurs U21s lose to Birmingham City in pre-season
Tottenham’s youth side faced Birmingham City in a behind-closed-doors friendly earlier this week, losing out to The Blues 3-1, a respectable result considering that the victors played a strong team, as per Lilywhite Rose on X.
Birmingham City, who are now managed by recently departed Tottenham Assistant Coach, Chris Davies, have heavily invested this summer in an attempt to secure an immediate return to the Championship.
Spurs’ U21s did put a goal past Davies’ side, however, as 20-year-old, Jude Soonsup-Bell netted Tottenham’s only goal of the match.
Spurs Web opinion
Birmingham City is a very tough test for an U21 side who are trying to bed in some U18 players following the promotion of the squad’s star players of the previous season.
Therefore, a 3-1 loss against a strong Birmingham side isn’t something to be disappointed in, with Jude Soonsup-Bell scoring another positive to take, suggesting that the forward, who scored ten PL2 goals last season, could have a successful EFL loan this season should the opportunity arise.
