What’s on this weekend
Hold on to your seats, this weekend arrives packed with events. Whether it is a mountain fiesta, a taste of tradition by the sea, village screenings or movie marathons in the city, there is plenty to do this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here is a selection of exciting upcoming happenings.
Up first is a three-day event in the forest of Platres. AgroFest will take visitors to the Platres Arena this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a unique, multisensory event. On day one, an open-air cinema will be set up at 7.30pm under the Perseids Meteor Showers screening The Grand Budapest Hotel. Days two and three will be dedicated to music, first playing reggaeton and dance music and then closing the event on day three with Greek hits. Food trucks serving street food and bars will be on site to add to the experience.
Salamiou village in Paphos will welcome Animafest this weekend with four days of screenings, exhibitions, concerts and sidebar events. Animation films in and out of competition categories will be screened while three exhibitions run in the village. In its 23rd edition, the festival will run from August 9 to 12 welcoming families, artists, campers and film fans to the rural village.
Over at Curium Theatre, the International Greek Drama Festival will present its final production for 2024 on Friday and Saturday night. A Greek production of Evripides’ The Bacchae will be presented under the direction of Thanos Papakonstantinou. Though the performance is in Greek, it will have surtitles in English and Greek so that more audiences can follow it.
For those in Nicosia, the options for outdoor cinema are plenty. On Thursday evening, the Faneromeni24 Arts Festival will screen the beloved film Little Nicholas and the Treasure Hunt at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The screening will start at 8.30pm and has free entry. The Constantia Summer Movie Marathon is also on at the Constantia Theatre in Pallouriotissa with screenings from the independent cinema world every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9pm.
Lastly, 6th Agia Napa Festival of Traditional Flavours will fill the central square with kiosks and stands showcasing the flavours of the island and its traditional crafts while a live music programme entertains visitors from August 9 to 11.
