Lindor Notches Clutch Hit in Mets 5-3 Win

0

This 10-game road trip has turned out to be a struggle for the New York Mets. They dropped a series to the Los Angeles Angels, and after winning in St. Louis on Monday, they lost the first of three to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Mets needed a win, and while it was once again difficult, especially for the offense, they were able to come through late in a 5-3 win over the Rockies. Francisco Lindor got the big two-run go-ahead single in the top of the 9th to break a 2-2 tie and propelled the Mets to a win.

Paul Blackburn Paying Off For The Mets

The Mets made a series of moves at the trade deadline. Even before the deadline. None of them were a splash move but were filled with depth that could help the team. One of them was acquiring Paul Blackburn from the Oakland Athletics. Blackburn was solid in his Mets debut in Anaheim and was very effective again in Colorado in start number two. Blackburn struck out six in 6 innings of work while allowing 2 runs (1 earned). In two starts with the Mets, Blackburn has 12 strikeouts. So far, so good, for the Mets trade deadline acquisition.

Lindor Comes Through

Ever since the middle of the four-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in late July, Lindor has cooled off. His recent struggles have correlated with New York’s offense not coming through with RISP lately. Lindor had failed to come through in the top of the 7th inning with the game tied by striking out and leaving Ben Gamel stranded on second. Two innings later, Lindor had a chance to rebound with the bases loaded and ripped a base hit on the first pitch he saw from Victor Vodnik down the right-field line, scoring two. Jesse Winker would follow with an RBI single as the Mets took a 5-2 lead in the 9th inning.

José Buttó Key Out Of The Bullpen Again

José Buttó might be the most valuable reliever in the Mets bullpen right now. Buttó was good once again for the Mets in the 7th and 8th innings with the game tied. He shut the Rockies out, struck out two, and, most importantly, gave the Mets a chance to win.

Player Of The Game: Francisco Lindor

Lindor’s clutch hitting in the 9th inning was the key moment in the Mets’ win.

On Deck:

David Peterson takes the mound for the Mets on Thursday, and he’ll be matched up against the Rockies Austin Gomber. The game will be televised locally at 3:10 p.m. EDT on SNY and broadcast on WCBS 880.
