Tracking Debby: Tornadoes possible in NY, NJ as storm brings heavy rain and wind
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Debby is steadily approaching the tri-state area Friday morning, expected to bring heavy rain and gusts.
A tornado watch was issued for parts of New York and New Jersey through 2 p.m. on Friday.
A flood watch is in effect through Friday night for western portions of New Jersey. Expect 1 to 2 inches of rain with locally higher amounts possible.
A wind advisory is in effect starting at noon Friday until 11 p.m. Expect sustained winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph especially near coastal areas.
A high surf advisory is in effect for coastal areas from noon Friday until noon Saturday. We can expect large breaking waves of 4 to 10 feet as well as dangerous rip currents near all beaches.
We can expect the remnants of Debby to move to the west of the region throughout the day. We will see showers and thunderstorms Friday morning followed by stronger storms with the possibility of tornadoes later in the day.
We can expect scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday morning with rain becoming heavy at times later in the evening into the overnight hours.
The higher amounts of rain will fall over northern and western areas of the region where as much as 2 to 3 inches are possible in spots. Around 1 to 2 inches are possible over the remainder of the region.
Flooding of rivers and roadways is possible, especially over interior sections as the storm moves through the area.
The rain will taper off after midnight in the city and after 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday for Long Island and Connecticut.
Winds will diminish during the overnight hours into Saturday morning.
