All hands on deck: NYC launches effort to crack down on crime along 14th Street
EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) – The city is launching a new effort to crack down on crime along 14th Street in Manhattan.
The area has seen a rash of violent crimes, including a triple stabbing near Avenue A and East 14th Street back in June. The 14th Street Community Improvement Coalition will focus on tackling crime between 1st Avenue and Avenue A.
Its broad priorities include addressing crime, illegal vending, retail theft, drug use and unlicensed marijuana ships. New York City reported crime is down year over year, but remains a top concern.
The 9th and 13th NYPD precincts that serve the area are expanding partnerships with businesses, including a WhatsApp chat channel to communicate in real-time with store owners.
The city also announced a $1 million investment for a new NYPD mobile command center on 14th Street, which will be staffed by uniformed officers.
