The 23-year-old Nunez is a fascinating story, and he showed off impressive stuff in his debut with St. Lucie. Nunez was drafted out of high school in the 29th round back in 2019 by the Padres. He then played in two seasons in the minors as a hitter before getting released. He was eligible to return to college, and he did, with three years of playing at the University of Tampa. He had a .818 OPS and a 3.09 ERA in his final college season. He only pitched in 11 games in college and two scoreless innings with the FCL Mets before his St. Lucie debut.
In his St. Lucie debut, his fastball was up to 95 mph, his slider reached over 3,000 rpms and his changeup had up to 21 inches of vertical break.
