Inmates attack prison guard, union threatens action
A prison guard was attacked by two inmates after he confiscated contraband from their cell, Pasydy union charged on Friday as it called for better working conditions.
“This attack is the straw that broke the camel’s back, causing strong feelings of indignation and despair.”
According to the union, the prison guard saw a banned item in a cell and was attacked by two inmates after he confiscated it.
“All because he did his job.”
The physical assault was followed with swearing and threats towards other staff, Pasydy said.
“This is the environment and daily life of our colleagues.”
This cannot go on any longer, and the union will convene to discuss possible measures, Pasydy specified.
“The state has a duty to intervene immediately and not drag its feet any longer. It must take action to solve these issues and dysfunctionalities that the prison department faces.”
Last month, a prison guard’s vehicle was bombed twice in an attack seen as an act of revenge. Four people were arrested over the incident.
Isotita union also chimed in to saying it was ‘disgraceful’ the state was allowing this to happen as problems of this nature have been chronically plaguing prisons.
