5,000 SLEMCO customers without power in St. Martin Parish due to grid issue
ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- More than 5,000 SLEMCO customers are without power in St. Martin Parish, according to the power company's outage map.
The power outage was reported at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the map.
In a Facebook post, SLEMCO said the power outage in the Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville area is because of a transmission grid issue.
"Grid owners are working to resolve the issue. In the meantime, SLEMCO crews are currently working on back feeding," the social media post read.
SLEMCO said there is no need for customers to report an outage.
"The outage is a transmission issue and not a SLEMCO issue needing to be repaired," the company said in the social media post.
A SLEMCO representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
South Louisiana Community College said in an announcement to students that classes for the remainder of today will be canceled at the St. Martinville campus due to the power outage.
This report will be updated as information becomes available.
