Transfer news: Powerhouse Archbishop Mitty girls basketball team adds high-profile East Bay guard
OAKLAND – One of the Bay Area’s top girls basketball players has transferred to the region’s premier program.
Junior guard Devin Cosgriff is moving from Oakland’s Bishop O’Dowd to perennial San Jose powerhouse Archbishop Mitty.
The all-Bay Area News Group selection has scholarship offers from defending NCAA champion South Carolina, plus Stanford and UCLA among others.
Cosgriff helped lead the Dragons to a NorCal Division I title game a season ago, defeating Carondelet in the championship game with a short midrange jump shot with three seconds remaining.
O’Dowd coach Malik McCord told the Bay Area News Group on Wednesday that there are no hard feelings about Cosgriff’s move.
“She’s a great kid, and I wish her the best of luck,” McCord said.
Mitty has been the runner-up in each of the past three CIF Open Division state finals. Its top senior from last season, guard Morgan Cheli, is now at UConn.
Cosgriff will join a team that returns reigning two-time Bay Area News Group player of the year McKenna Woliczko, who like the former O’Dowd star is entering her junior season, and sophomore guard Tee McCarthy.
Meanwhile, O’Dowd should still be a strong team this winter. Leading scorer and rebounder Jayla Stokes will be back, and junior Lizzy Quinteros is expected to make her return after missing most of last season because of an injury.
