Greens protest plans for Aphrodite’s Rock

0

The Green Party on Thursday expressed “great concern” over plans to develop Aphrodite’s Rock that would cause “irrevocable damage” to the environment.

In a statement, it said there were concerning proposals by the deputy tourism ministry and transport ministry for Aphrodite’s Rock, which falls under a Natura 2000 protected site.

These proposals “could lead to irrevocable changes to our natural environment and cultural heritage”.

“Our history and culture should not be sacrificed for any interests.”

According to Andreas Evlavis, from the Paphos district Green Party office, the deputy tourism ministry has spoken of creating an organised beach at the location. This would mean beach beds and umbrellas, possibly with kiosks too.

“This site is protected, it is extremely popular as it is.

“Any intervention should be limited to cleanliness and offering accessibility to people with disabilities.”

The deputy tourism ministry was not immediately available for comment.

Evlavis said nature was irreplaceable and “we will not allow yet another Natura site to be ‘eaten up’ for profits.”
