'His son ought to be celebrated': Republican defends Tim Walz's kid from Coulter's attack

An outraged Republican slapped back at pundit Ann Coulter and other conservatives who mocked Gov. Tim Walz's neurodivergent son.

Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY) took to X Thursday to condemn Coulter's since-deleted attack, lambasting as "weird" Gus Walz's emotional response to his father's speech at the Democratic National Convention.

"I may not agree with [Walz's] prescription for America's challenges - but I've always believed in shielding our children from attack," Molinaro wrote. "His son Gus, our kids - neurodivergent and of all abilities - ought to be celebrated and supported. I've done it my whole career and will continue to push for everyone to #ThinkDIFFERENTLY."

Gus Walz, 17, reportedly "stole the show" Wednesday with his response to his father's message to his family on the Chicago stage: “Hope, Gus, and Gwen – you are my entire world, and I love you."

The teenager stood up from his seat and said, “That’s my dad."

The following day, his mother Gwen Walz spoke to People Magazine interview about Gus' diagnosis with nonverbal learning disability, which affects spatial-visual skills.

“These individuals are very intelligent and articulate well verbally, but they are typically clumsy with motor and spatial coordination,” Penn State genomics professor Santhosh Girirajan told NBC News.

“It’s called a learning disorder because there are a lot of cues other than verbal cues that are necessary for us to keep information in our memory.”

Molinaro was joined in his condemnation of Coulter's attack by Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI).

"This is what today’s Republican party has become," Scholten wrote on X. "It’s disgusting, vile, and cruel. And it’s why good-hearted West Michiganders are rejecting it in droves."
