Jump in Oklahoma student test scores reflects new scoring system

0

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — New results of state testing show more Oklahoma students are proficient for their grade level, but is it the result of better education or lower standards?

Investigative outlet "Oklahoma Voice" first reported this and said school districts were shocked.

"I would love it if test scores were that much higher, but I just really don't believe they are," said Representative Mark McBride (R-Moore).

The report first released by "Oklahoma Voice" showed student test scores for the year had a big increase in proficiency rates.

One example the report shows is 59% of Oklahoma fifth graders were labeled as proficient in English.

Last year, only 29% scored as proficient.

Thursday morning, Representative McBride said there was a lot of confusion surrounding the new test scores.

"I was totally taken aback because, I mean, it was just...what's going on? We haven't heard about this. I don't think districts have heard about this. And I mean, I've got nothing but questions," said McBride.

Questions like "why", "who said to do this", "what was the reasoning behind this."

Shortly after News 4's interview, Representative McBride asked those questions with the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability.

He learned Oklahoma academic standards are updated every six years which means it's hard to compare this year's numbers with previous ones.

"If it's to make it look like students in Oklahoma have excelled that much in one year. I don't believe that. I don't I mean, it would be great if they had. I would love that, but I don't believe that," said McBride.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters responded to questions about the test scores at Thursday's Board of Education meeting.

"You guys haven't seen this big announcement from the board. You guys haven't seen us walk through it yet because again, what we're trying to do is make sure the districts understand how do you use these with your teachers and training for next year...how do you make sure that the context is there," said Walters.

Representative McBride says lawmakers are looking into how to interpret the scores so they can be shared accurately statewide.

In the Thursday press conference at the Board of Education meeting, Walters explained there will be talks of the data from test scores at the next board meeting.
