The Centre told the Supreme Court that Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, will be retrospective. This allows first-time offenders arrested before July 1, 2024, to seek bail if they've completed one-third of their maximum sentence. Serious crimes like death or life imprisonment are excluded.
