WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024 - Day 8 Live Blog: Six teams still in the race for a medal. We're on a rain delay, Puerto Rico leading Mexico 5-2 in the bottom of third
Welcome to the live blog of Day 8 of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024. It's the last Super Round day in Barranquilla and all six teams are still in contention for a World Cup medal. Only Japan and Puerto Rico have secured a spot in the medal games, while Nicaragua, Chinese Taipei, Colombia and Mexico are fighting for the other two available spots.
Only four squads remain in the hunt for a spot in the World Championship Final. Japan (3-1), Puerto Rico (3-1), Nicaragua (2-2) and Chinese Taipei (2-2). Colombia and Mexico, both holding a 1-3 record, aim only to advance to the Bronze Medal Game. Hosts Colombia as well as Nicaragua and Puerto Rico are looking to finish on the podium for this first time at a WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup.
Today's schedule in Barranquilla features Mexico vs Puerto Rico at 10:30 am Nicaragua vs Japan at 3 pm; and Colombia vs Chinese Taipei at 7 pm.
For the Placement Round in Cartagena, Italy take on Venezuela at 10:30 am; South Africa and Dominican Republic play at 3 pm; while Guam and Netherlands close their participation in the tournament at 7 pm. Dominican Republic is leading the standings with 4-0; followed by Ital and Venezuela (3-1); Netherlands and South Africa (1-3); and Guam (0-4).

In the second game of the day, Nicaragua and Japan will play their last Super Round game at 3 pm. Japan, 3-1 in the standings, have secured a place in the medal games tomorrow. With a win today, they will clinch a spot in the Final, their second in history counting the U-15 age bracket. Nicaragua is aiming to win their first-ever medal in this event. The game will start at 3 pm.
In the last game of the day, Colombia and Chinese Taipei will lock horns in Barranquilla in a contest that will define the qualified teams for the medal games. This is a must-win game for hosts Colombia to keep alive their hopes of a medal in this World Cup. For Chinese Taipei, a win will secure their presence in tomorrow's medal games, with chances to be in the 2 pm Bronze Medal Game or the 7 pm World Championship Final. Colombia is looking for their first ever medal, while Chinese Taipei own one world title and 10 total medals (counting the previous World Youth Baseball Championships).

Mexico 2 - 5 Puerto Rico - Play by play
Bottom 2nd - Puerto Rico keep scoring. They increased their lead to 5-2 with two in the second inning, with a clutch two-out, two run double off the left field wall by Jean Rosa.
Top 2nd - It's a one-run ballgame. Mexico score one with a clutch RBI single by Roberto Delgadillo to plate Alex Tolosa and the score now is 3-2. The inning ended with a nice plat at the hole by Puerto Rico shortsop Bradley Rodriguez.
Bottom 1st - Puerto Rico answer back with a three run rally to take the lead in the scoreboard. Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Caribbean team, and a hit by pitch scored the game-tying run. Arnaldo Rodriguez and Valentin Carrasquillo made it 3-1 with an RBI single each. The second out of the inning was a perfect throw by Mexico's center fielder Joel Vargas to throw out Jean Rosa at home.
Top 1st - Mexico go ahead with one run in their first at bat. Joel Vargas walked, advanced on a sac bunt, and the scored on a two-out RBI single by Alexander Huerta. It was Huerta's second RBI of the tournament.

Preview - In the first game of the day, Mexico and Puerto Rico will meet at Edgar Renteria stadium. With a win, Puerto Rico will clinch a spot in tomorrow's Final, securing at the same time their first ever medal in this age bracket. On the other hand, Mexico need a win today, and a combination of results, to claim a spot in the Bronze Medal Game. Mexico hold one bronze medal in the history of the competition, won in 2009 in Taiwan, when the tournament was still a U-16 event. Mexico and Puerto Rico have never played before in this event. First pitch is scheduled at 10:30.
