Danny Jansen becomes first MLB player to play for both teams in same game

When Boston and Toronto resumed a game postponed from June, Danny Jansen made MLB history

Today the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays resumed a game that was suspended back on June 26, when heavy rain caused the game to be paused in the second inning. At that time Danny Jansen was at the plate as the designated hitter for the Blue Jays.

When the game resumed today, Jansen was again at home plate.

Only he was crouching behind it as the catcher for the Red Sox.

Jansen was traded to Boston at MLB’s trade deadline, and with the Red Sox then designating backup catcher Reese McGuire for assignment, that opened up an opportunity for Boston, and Jansen, to make some peculiar baseball history.

Which they did today, as Jansen became the first MLB player in history to appear in a single game for both teams.

The MLB shared this incredible image of Jansen warming up for the game in his new Red Sox uniform, while the scoreboard showed him at the plate for the Blue Jays:

Meanwhile, Boston’s social media team had a little fun with the moment:

After lining out in his first at-bat, Jansen singled for the Red Sox in the fifth inning.

Boston manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen would be in the lineup for today’s resumed game on Friday, noting the situation.

“Yeah he’s catching. Let’s make history,” Cora told reporters last week.

History, made.
