'Gonna need a bigger boat:' GOP strategist channels 'Jaws' to weigh in on Harris' chances

A Republican strategist is bullish on Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' chances against Republican Donald Trump this November — if one key polling metric holds.

Mike Madrid, who served as California's GOP political director before co-founding the anti-Trump group of Republicans known as the Lincoln Project, took to the social media site X on Monday night to gush over Harris' odds.

"If Kamala Harris continues to show polling numbers with Trump under 34% with Latino voters and an increase in the GOP defection rate to 9%+ we’re gonna need a bigger boat," he said.

Madrid couched his comments in a follow-up post though, clarifying that most polls showing Trump in that range stem from Democratic-leaning pollsters, "who aren't very credible."

"... but we’re gonna see movement post convention among college+ Republicans and US born Latino men in Harris’ direction," he said.

When asked what his "Jaws" reference about needing a bigger boat meant for Harris, Madrid said: "Very good."

Indeed, a survey obtained by The Hill on Friday showed Harris leading Trump by a wide margin among Hispanic voters in North Carolina.

The TelevisaUnivision Consumer Strategy & Insights/Media Predict poll showed Harris with 56 percent support from likely Hispanic voters in the state. Trump was polling at 34 percent support.
